NHCFAE in Puerto Rico

It was an incredible week April 24th to April 29th we visited Puerto Rico to participate in the Professional Women Controller (PWC) Conference in San Juan. President Oscar Torres had the opportunity to begin the week by visiting the CERAP on Monday 4/24/23 and met with coalition members in the facility to express our solidarity with CERAP employees and oppose the consideration to relocate the facility to Florida.

A social event was held that evening where our NHCFAE FAAmilia gathered for an evening filled with laughter, great food, and unity.

We had a table at the PWC conference where we had the opportunity to talk to PWC members about the work we do at our NHCFAE. We also spoke to students from surrounding universities who were able to attend the conference and highlighted the internship opportunities the FAA has to offer which they can qualify for.

Oscar had the opportunity to support The Office of Civil Rights in visiting Ana G. Mendez University and InterAmericana University along with Gioai Albi from ACR. We spoke with students on how to prepare a federal resume and how to navigate USA Jobs.gov in preparation to apply for internships. We participated in a career fair at the Bayamon campus of the InterAmericana university as well.

Oscar also moderated a discussion with the COO of ATO Mr. Tim Arel with students of InterAmericana University in their Isla Verde Campus. The students asked questions and got the opportunity to meet Tim after the discussion.

The week’s events concluded with a 1st time ever co-supported STEM event by three employee associations and the FAA. PWC, NBCFAE, and NHCFAE partnered with the agency to host nearly 300 kids and college students at the San Juan Airport. Various lines of businesses participated along with local universities and employers like FedEx, UFA, and Infina. The FAA’s flight check Challenger came in and visitors were able to board the aircraft and see the equipment that checks landing procedures for airports around the country.

A huge shoutout goes to the team in Puerto Rico who worked tirelessly to make this happen. We are proud because they are all NHCFAE members. Tamara Sabalier, ATC SJU, Carlo Perez ATM SJU, Denisse Rivera ZSU, Marluan Diaz SJU FLM, John Melecio ZSU ATM.
